I've got a total of about 3 flipping kills with these damn things. I can't use them to save my life and I end up jut throwing them in blatantly obvious spots on a road. The only map I ever got kills with it was on Arica Harbour from those hilariously fragile quadbikes and humvees.
Tips for placing them?

What I do is on Isla when im on the defending team, I'll run into the out of bounds area, and drop mines on the hills, you know just as you go out of bounds before the sand bunker. I usually get like 4-5 kills multiple times.
If you're on other maps like atacama then a good spot to drop mines is in the little water puddles. Or if you really wanna piss the other team off, line mines up at the front of the base, its really hard to see mines when you're coming out of there coz of the slope.
Also, mines float in the water, so on Isla, drop mines at the front of the base near the docks in the second stage of defending. You'll get the occasional kill doing that. Also, put mines in groups of 2. That way you have enough for other traps.

Here's a nice idea I use.
When someone is arming an M-Com and you are with them, cover the M-Com with mines. When the defenders coming rushing, they usually throw grenades causing the mines to blow up, in which it severly damages the M-Com (much more then C4) and possibly takes out a few of Disarmers while you are on the other side on the map.
Remember, MY TACTIC!

1. Shadows are your friend. (as are puddles/craters, but shadows are best).
Armour drivers will simply not see them. Maps like arica harbour, plenty of shadows infront of both mains. Attama Desert, put them on the shadow side of the flag towns, tanks always go by the side of the flags not through them. Heavy metal, centre flag, once again plenty of shadows on Russian side of B, plus every gumnut seems to use the main roads, so your guaranteed a kill. (Sorry talking conquest here).
2. Always place in 2's on armour maps. I never lay 1 mine (except on Fantasy). 1 mine wont take out a tank, but 2 will.
3. Get the ammo upgrade and place all 6 at the start of the round and then forget about it. Once you get a kill, only then place more.
I love mines... they just keep on giving when you least expect it...
